Listen to preview of new work, "Rouser" (7/17/06)
The piece is still a work in progress, but I decided to bring this early preview to anyone who might be interested. This portion you hear is a minute of the fully orchestrated piece. It is partially inspired by the sea, as I often wished to write a piece that describes my feelings on sea vessels while escaping Boston Harbor to George's Island, or while heading out for some deep sea fishing in Daytona. The program could be loosely described as a portrait of a sea vessel, and a musical description of the experience of traversing the open seas. - Jesse Hopkins

"Toolshed" Score Rejected! Mp3 and video download available (4/21/05)

Jesse Hopkins' original score for I Oversee the Maintenance of a Toolshed was rejected due to a stylistic disagreement between the director and composer. The recording with Apostolos Paraskevas has been cancelled due to the development. Director George Cox and writer Will Gary of Funtime Entertainment had asked the composer to compose the score in any style he wished, but after hearing the neo-classical piece, scored for classical guitar and chamber ensemble, they decided a pop soundtrack would be more appropriate for the mood they were trying to convey.

Hopkins had this to say about his first rejected score. "I've worked with George since he directed for Kaiju, and he told me this would be an opportunity to write in a more experimental style, which I happily did. My score had been previewed and approved along the way, but in the end Funtime thought it was too ambitious and serious for their lighthearted and comedy. George told me it was too good for the movie! I saw something else in it, knew it was unusual, and knew that if I simply wrote to the comedy, I wouldn't be supporting the unique humor, but would in fact decrease it."

As a special thanks for the time and effort put into the score, Funtime has allowed the film with the rejected score to be presented on this site. A three minute clip from the film is available for download here:

"Toolshed" score to feature Apostolos Paraskevas (9/10/04)
Renowned classical guitarist Apostolos Paraskevas will be featured in Hopkins' composition for the upcoming festival short, I Oversee the Maintenance of a Toolshed. A long admirer of Paraskevas' work, Hopkins asked the guitarist to perform on the soundtrack in order to reflect the single-mindedness and manual labor of the main character. More news as the composition is completed.

I Oversee the Maintenance of a Toolshed (9/8/04)
Jesse Hopkins is scoring the short film entitled I Oversee the Maintenance of a Toolshed, written by William Garre and directed by George Cox. There will probably be the note A# in the music, as Jesse Hopkins uses each of the 12 notes in almost every score. This also goes for B#. Expect some bubbling Marimba here and there, Classical Guitar and perhaps even Harpsichord. Visit the film maker's site at www.funtimeentertainment.com
